Gill Upton
Journalist and Editor
I’ve been working as a journalist and editor long enough to be able to switch comfortably between editing publications and newsletters to writing features, analyses, speeches, blogs, moderating conferences, running Media Workshops and advising how best to write press releases or acting as spokesperson.
I work across print - in both mainstream as well as custom publishing - social media, online publications and commercial channels.
I cover several industries, namely the business of travel and, in the consumer world, education and homes. I'm Editor of NappyValleyNet's annual Schools Guide
(http://www.nappyvalleynet.com/schools) and its inaugural Design & Build Guide 2016 (http://www.nappyvalleynet.com/homes ).
I also edit two other quarterly publications, both for prominent travel management companies.
Outside that, I run writing workshops at Sixth Form Colleges and consult with schools on their website content.
As a freelancer, I’ve produced special sections and custom publishing projects for a variety of companies, including the custom publishing division of the Financial Times, American Express and even Boots the Chemist. I’ve also written blogs for a major business travel technology provider.
As a freelance editor, I’ve created editorial strategies for pitches for the likes of Thomas Cook and written Holiday Reports for leading luxury tour operator Kuoni. I also know all about the cruise industry, having edited a publication in this field for the last five years.
I’ve taught PR staff how best to write press releases to avoid them being binned within seconds, and advised their clients how to get the most out of journalists.
